There are three major types of motorcycle: street. off-road. and dual purpose. Within these types. there are many different sub-types of motorcycles for many different purposes.

The two major causes of motorcycle accidents in the United States are: motorists pulling out or turning in front of motorcyclists and violating their rights-of-way and motorcyclists running wide through turns. The former is sometimes called a SMIDSY. an acronym formed from the motorists common response of Sorry mate. I didn t see you .[48] The latter is more commonly caused by operating a motorcycle while intoxicated.[49] Motorcyclists can anticipate and avoid some of these crashes with proper training. increasing their conspicuousness to other traffic. and separating alcohol and riding.

A more innovative design was known in the UK as the Cyclemaster. This had a complete powered rear wheel which was simply substituted for the bicycle rear wheel. which originated from a design by two DKW engineers in Germany. Slightly larger machines. commonly with a 98 cubic centimetres (6.0 cu in) engine were known as autocycles. On the other hand some dirt bikes. such as the Czech-made Jawa. were derived from motorcycles.
